Responsibilities:

  • The General Counsel is responsible for leading the Office of the General Counsel and its team in the provision of legal services for the University, to include its controlled affiliates.
  • This position manages and supervises the University’s legal representation in all transactional matters, litigation and administrative proceedings, dispute resolution, compliance with federal/state statutes and regulations impacting higher education institutions, provision of legal opinions, and preventative legal services.
  • This position is responsible for resolving all legal claims, initiating and appealing all lawsuits and administrative proceedings as appropriate.
  • The General Counsel also manages the office budget, oversees legal expenditures for the University, issues contracts for legal services and retains outside counsel on specific matters, and motivates and leads personnel.
  • The General Counsel maintains an appropriate framework for internal control to evaluate and protect the University’s legal interests and reduce its risks.
  • All University contracts relating to employment, purchasing, real estate, patents and technology marketing, intellectual property, external sales, sponsored research, and other activities are subject to General Counsel review.
  • The General Counsel also provides legal advice on matters under the individual’s expertise, which may include research compliance, export controls and compliance, global risk and security operations, construction and real estate, contracts, employment and labor law, student affairs, campus safety, discrimination and harassment, athletics, litigation, health care law, risk management, gifts and estates, intellectual property, privacy and information security, and other matters relating to higher education law.
  • The General Counsel also consults and collaborates with outside counsel with the Board of Regents, the Attorney General of Kansas, other Regent Universities and State of Kansas Agencies, to provide consistency in the interpretation of the law and application of policy.

Required Qualifications:  

  • JD from an accredited ABA law school.
  • State of Kansas license and bar admission, or admission to membership within 12 months of hire.
  • Ten years of progressive experience as a practicing attorney in a complex organization, firm, government agency, university, non-profit or business corporation.
  • Five years of leadership experience, including managing the work of attorneys and other professionals and/or representing and working with large and complex, decentralized organizations with multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience directly managing or supporting leadership in managing controversial and/or high profile issues.
  • Demonstrated commitment and contribution to fostering and advancing equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • High ethical standards with a strong commitment to legal ethics as exhibited in knowledge and practice, professional responsibility, application materials and interview.
  • Exceptional analytical, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills as demonstrated from application materials, interview, references and professional work history.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a higher education environment, and/or representing an institution of higher education.
  • Experience in with academic medical centers and/or representing academic medical centers or healthcare related entities.
  • Demonstrated strengths in executive leadership, including setting vision, strategy, and inclusive leadership.
  • Familiarity with the University of Kansas.
  • Fifteen or more years of experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future. 

Education: 

  • A Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited ABA law school.

Travel Requirements:  

This position will involve no travel.
